As pregnancy progresses, the extra weight around the stomach pulls at the ligaments around the waist and spine. During the last three months, hormonal changes make the supporting joints and ligaments relax and prepare for labor. It is then that backache–especially in the lower back–is a problem. the added weight results in a change in posture that can bring about aches in the groin area. Some common sense reminders during pregnancy:

  • Take it easy. If you are aching all over, it is usually a sign you are overdoing things, so slow down.
  • Take care with posture. The natural impulse as you get larger is to stick the stomach out, but try to keep the back straight instead of curved. Take care not to overstrain when bending and lifting and use your legs more than your back.

A regular weekly aromatherapy massage from a friend or partner is beneficial for strain and backache. A nice pregnancy massage oil can be mixed up easily using 5 Tablespoons of pure jojoba oil, 10 drops tangerine essential oil and 5 drops lavender essential oil.

Some tips for those giving a pregnancy massage:

  • The ideal position for a back massage for the mother-to-be is to sit astride a chair facing the back of the chair, her body supported by cushions in front to lean on. As pregnancy advances, the side lying position on a bed supported by pillows under her knees may be more comfortable.
  • Keep all movements gentle and relaxing. Encourage her to let you know what feels good.
  • Massage those areas where there is tension and always massage TOWARD the heart.
  • Don’t press on varicose veins, just glide around them.
  • Avoid the lower abdomen and back during the first trimester. During the rest of the pregnancy avoid deep pressure on the abdomen and lower back.
  • Ten minutes for a back massage or or ten minutes for foot and leg massage is adequate.

Craniosacral therapy can be very helpful to moms-to-be in all stages of pregnancy. Often a woman‘s sacrum can be buckled, causing back pain and difficulty in labor for mom and also for baby whose body may experience increased torsion passing through an imbalanced pelvis.

    Thanks for your post. I am doing pilates (I am preparing my body before the big leep) but sometimes the pain is impossible to bear. I am searching ways to prevent my backpains now that I am not preggo, because it might get worse once I am (I hope not).
