As new moms we were told to put our babies to sleep on their backs. Experts believed that if your baby sleeps on her front she may be more at risk for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Like most mothers I listened to what the experts and the government warned us and put my newborns to sleep on their backs. Did the Back to Sleep program really reduce SIDS? Is it safe to put a newborn to sleep on her tummy? The new book, The Truth About Tummy Time, by Pediatric Physical Therapist, Stephanie J. Pruitt answers these questions.
This book is simple and straight to the point. All parents want to know how to keep their babies safe and healthy. There are tons of books, websites, and other material for us to use to find answers to our parenting questions but until now nobody has put together a guide on how to avoid SIDS without slowing down your baby’s development.
In less than 100 pages, Stephanie explains the facts behind and reasons why the government started the Back to Sleep program, it’s impact on SIDS statistics, why it is important to allow your infant time on his tummy, and sides, why it is harmful to keep your baby in his car seat, stroller or bouncer for extended periods of time, and examples of babies with deformities due to spending too much time on their backs.
After reading this book I was relieved to learn that I have done just about everything that she recommends with my babies. From the moment I brought my newborns home from the hospital I made sure I placed them on their tummies every single day. I learned about the importance of tummy time from their pediatricians. Stephanie explains in more detail why it is important to rotate your baby from his tummy, to his side and on his back every single day. This helps your infants development and reduces his risk for SIDS.
The Truth About Tummy Time makes a great gift for a new mom. It is a short easy read that answers the most common questions new parents have about tummy time and the Back to Sleep Program.
