Why We Oppose SOPA and PIPA

What is SOPA and PIPA?

On January 24 the US Congress will begin voting on two bills, Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House. These bills would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.

Law-abiding reputable Internet companies like, AOL, EBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo and Zynga would have to monitor everything users link to or upload or face the risk of time-consuming litigation. Because The Healthy Moms Magazine is an interactive blog with several contributing writers and an online forum, I would have to either spend all day monitoring the links and articles posted to this site or shut the site down in order to prevent litigation.

Below is another great explanation as to why these bills are wrong, should be apposed and why they hurt online entrepreneurs like myself.

SOPA and PIPA will not end Internet piracy.

In fact these two bills would only make matters worse. The websites that commit piracy will continue under different URLs while law abiding companies will have to pay penalties for things that occur which are beyond their control.

Google has an online petition that I encourage you all to sign. We need to let congress know before these bills come for a vote that they are both wrong and will only hurt our economy and take away our freedoms. Please visit Google and sign the petition today.

I recvd an email this morning saying that all who brought awareness yesterday did help. A quote from an email I recvd “Approaching Monday's crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly opposing PIPA. Last week there were 5. And it just takes just 41 solid “no” votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate. What seemed like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach. ” This is good news! The people can hopefully have some reach, especially since some have lost faith in our reach and words reaching anyone!

I am definitely opposed to online piracy. While I have been a victim of this type of behavior, I don't think PIPA and SOPA would help. A solution is needed but this is not the solution.
