5 Important Nutrients Women Should Take After Gastric Bypass Surgery

 By: B. Lyttle
If you are a woman who has recently lost a lot of weight because of your gastric bypass surgery, you must have been told by your doctor to take a prescribed dosage of vitamin supplements. Gastric bypass operation reduces your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from the food you eat.
As a woman, you will always be required to consume more vitamins and minerals as the menstrual cycle and pregnancy puts an added stress on your body after the operation. There are certain vitamins and minerals that are important for your body and a deficiency of these can make you fall sick. The five important nutrients women should take after the gastric bypass surgery is as follows:
  1. Vitamin B-12
The body loses the ability to absorb Vitamin B-12 after the bypass surgery. This vitamin is very important for formation of red blood cells. After your surgery, if you are pregnant, you will need your body to heal quickly and for this you need new cells. This vitamin will help you create new cells and therefore you cannot risk a deficiency of it.
You will have to take supplements that will help Vitamin B-12 to reach your blood stream without going through the digestive system. You can take sublingual pills, nasal sprays and injections to ensure proper absorption of the vitamin by your body. Your doctor will decide on the dose after monitoring your body.
  1. Calcium
Calcium ensures that you have strong and healthy bones. Women are already prone to a calcium deficiency post menopause and thus you must start taking Calcium supplements, like, calcium citrate regularly after the surgery. After menopause, you must take enough calcium through supplements or food sources to ensure a healthy body.
  1. Iron
Anemia caused by iron deficiency, is a common problem after gastric bypass surgery. Women who are menstruating require iron to avoid a lot of health related issues. If you are approaching your menopause, you must take iron supplements along with your multivitamin tablets. You should take iron in the form of iron sulfate or gluconate, to avoid certain side effects like constipation and nausea, often caused by direct consumption of iron.
  1. Multivitamins

Women should = regularly consume multivitamin after the surgery to avoid malnutrition. After the surgery your intake of food is reduced and you do not get sufficient nutrients. You also lose a lot of nutrients during menstruation and if you do not take multivitamins you suffer from malnutrition.
You may not be able to tolerate multivitamin capsules immediately after the surgery. But you can start taking chewable tablets and progress towards capsules. You can also take multivitamins specially designed for women. Bariatric Advantageis the best known brand that you can trust to make up for your mineral and vitamin deficiencies after the surgery.
Gastric bypass surgery changes your body and if you become pregnant immediately after it, you will need special nutrition. Allow your doctor to regularly monitor your nutrition level and guide you through the pregnancy. Do not change your nutrient dosage without consulting your doctor first.
