Is Your Cell Phone Really Safe?
Is Your Cell Phone Really Safe?
By Lloyd Burrell
Who doesn’t love their cell phone? There’s so many things you can do with it, text, listen to music, play games, surf the Internet….even talk! Its hard to imagine how life was before this ingenious little gadget came along. But did you know cell phones are hazardous to you and your family’s health?
What’s wrong with my child talking on their cell phone?
The problem is their cell phone (and yours), are a source of electromagnetic fields known as EMFs. The Environmental Protection Agency tells us EMFs “are invisible lines of force that surround any electrical device that is plugged in and turned on.” This definition of EMFs applies to cell phones too, whether you are talking on it or not. These invisible lines of force may sound harmless but they are actually emitting a harmful form of man-made radiation. This radiation impacts everyone’s health. Our kids, however, are the most susceptible and the most at risk. Their smaller statures, smaller brains, and thinner skulls, means they can absorb up to three times more radiation as you and me. Also, their brain tissue is more conductive, and due to their age, are receiving exposures to this radiation over a lifetime, not just a few decades.
The scientific research backing up the dangers associated with cell phone use is overwhelming.
The recently published BioInitiative Report 2012 which reviewed over 30 years of independent studies shone the spotlight on the link between exposure to EMFs and Autism, Fetal Exposure, Fertility, Alzheimer’s Disease and other neurological and autoimmune disease effects. Based on the findings of research examining cell phone usage for a period of ten years, The International Agency for Research on Cancer came to some conclusions: these devices may cause cancer and mobile phones increase the incidence of acoustic neuromas or tumors. Other research concluded mice exposed to cell phone radiation experienced hyperactivity and impaired memory. Additional findings lead to some very important questions. Do you or your kids ever complain of headaches? Cell phone use has been linked to neurological concerns including migraines and vertigo. Are you considering having more children? Your husband’s sperm quality is at risk too, decreasing the chances of him fathering another child. EMFs don’t just affect men’s fertility either. A woman’s reproductive health can also be affected.
Still not convinced?
Get out your cell phone manual (if you can find it), and look for the information in tiny print you can barely read. This information instructs the user to never hold a mobile device close to the body as this will exceed the FCC’s exposure limits. No one wants to give up their cell phone and but you do need to be aware of the dangers and adjust your usage accordingly. You can protect you and your family by implementing and putting in to practice some cell phone safety tips in your home. Safe cell phone tips include:
- Keep conversations to a minimum.
- Use your phone only when necessary. Make calls short.
- Invest in a low EMF headset, or ear bud, and use it.
- Search for phones with lower radiation levels (S.A.R.).
- Follow the advice in the manual. Keep the cell phone as far away from the body as is feasibly possible.
- Don’t use your cell phone as an alarm clock, a radio, or to watch movies. All of these behaviors increase risk.
- Turn off your phone when it’s not being used. Cell phones are putting out EMFs when-ever they are turned on.
- Avoid using it when a strong signal is unavailable. More radiation is emitted when a connection is harder to find.
And last but not least, text don’t talk! Staying connected with your kids is a good thing and in today’s society pretty much a necessity, just do it as safely as possible!
