The latest trend for today’s fitness trainers is offering an online fitness and nutrition program. In one month I got pitched by three different online fitness programs. The concept sounds like it would benefit both the trainer and the individual trying to get fit. All the trainer needs to do is design a cool website with nutrition and fitness information along with workout videos, then just sit back and watch the clients come to him. While the individual trying to get fit can watch the videos from the comfort of his or her own home and try the program out. Sounds like a win, win situation to me.
However, now that there are dozens of these programs online you really need to do your homework before spending your time and money on one of these. Last month I had the opportunity to participate in a 30 day nutrition and fitness challenge with NX Fit, an online fitness program designed by fitness trainer, Matt Richter-Sand. At first I was excited to have been invited onto this opportunity but I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.
If you are a loyal follower of this blog you know that I am a very busy person with a crazy family. My five children keep me on my toes, two of whom have special needs. Also, my husband travels a lot for work so for about 80% of the time I am a single mom. I also live states away from friends and family and have a zero support network here. Time for myself is a rare commodity.
I’ve always wanted to get fit and tell myself that someday I will wake up early every morning and work out. Yeah, right! Like that is really going to happen.
Okay, back to the original topic, NX Fit. Matt recommends that you work out bright and early, right after you wake up in the morning. I’ve heard this before. If you work out before breakfast it is supposed to help jump start your metabolism. In order for me to do this I have to wake up by 5am because my special needs son is usually up by 5:30 and demands my attention. I tried working out early in the morning for the first three days, but was always interrupted.
Because mornings did not work I tried working out in the afternoon. However, I realized that I just could not complete a full workout. The NX workouts are 35 minutes to an hour long. Also, you have to record your reps because you are competing against yourself in order to stay motivated to get fit (more on that later). This takes another 10 minutes or so to do. So now your hour long workout has turned into an hour and ten minutes. Then add an extra 10-15 minutes for your kids to interrupt you while you are working out and that turns it into nearly an hour and a half. So who has an hour and a half of free time in the middle of their day? I sure don’t.
NX is designed for you to reach your fitness goals through fun competition. By writing down your reps and recording your heart rate you compete against yourself and you can also create a team with your friends and compete against each other. If you are an athlete or just someone that loves competition this would definitely keep you motivated to workout. However, I am not a competitive person. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to encourage me set aside an hour and a half out of my day every day to work out. It didn’t happen. I am sorry, Matt!
The nutrition program behind NX is simple and one that I have heard before. Eat whole grains, plenty of fruits and veggies and lean protein. Make sure you drink half of your weight in ounces of water every day. Eat only NX approved snacks in between meals. Since this is pretty much my normal diet I did not have a problem with the nutrition portion of the program.
My advice for busy moms like me who are looking for an online fitness program is this. Do research first and make sure you have enough free time to devot to the fitness required. Also, make sure the program offers something that will help you stay motivated to stick with it. Don’t give up!
On Monday I am starting a new online fitness program. This time the trainer is a woman and I sure hope this one will fit into my schedule. I am ready to tighten and tone this mama’s body!
