We signed up my seven-year-old for youth football for the first time this year. He’s always been a fan of the great American sport and watches the NFL on television with his father every year. When they watch the big game together my little boy will get his football out and reenact every play. He was super excited when we finally could afford to enroll him in our local youth football program.
When the season first started I was a little nervous but excited for him at the same time. He’s always dreamed about playing football and Mom and Dad finally made it happen. But, like every sport there are risks. Injuries happen all the time and the most concerning football injuries are concussions. I needed to let go of my nerves and put my trust in his coaches and the safety gear. But still sometimes accidents do happen.
Author Bobby Vernon knows all too well the risks involved playing amateur football because he has been a football coach for nearly 20 years down in Miami, Florida. He is on a mission to educate parents and coaches on how to keep their boys safe on the field. His new book, “Tackling Dummies : Playing Amateur Football Smarter,” explains in detail how to make American football safe enough for kids to play.
Bobby Vernon covers the following topics:
- Football – the sport
- Football – the culture
- Tackling Dummies Smarter training photos.
I found his training photos especially helpful. As a first time football mom I still don’t quite understand the sport. “Tackling Dummies,” is a simple and fast read that explains everything that a new football parent like myself would need to know about the sport. He also shares stories that coaches and parents can relate to and learn from.
“Awesome book! Coach Vernon’s love for the game and for players of all ages comes through on every page. Football has to become safer. Tackling Dummies suggests solutions that can reduce the force and frequency of head impacts, improve the game and make it more fun for kids while preserving its essence.” Dr. John Kuluz, Director of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurorehabilitation at Nicklaus Children‘s Hospital, Miami, FL.
