Most Popular Baby Names By State for 2017

Is your baby‘s name top in your state?  The Social Security Administration released their top 100 names by state for 2017.  Of course you can sift through their massive database, or check out our list of top five names per each state.

While our Ultimate Guide to Finding the Perfect Name For Your Baby will tell you that names like Emma and Olivia for girls and Noah and Liam for boys will definitely find their way on to most states, some new unexpected names like Harper, Evelyn, Oliver and Lucas took top spot in states like North Dakota, Maine, Vermont and Iowa.

Girl Baby Names

Surprisingly, top five name in the country, Sophia, did not rank as a top name for any state and Isabella only ranked first Florida.  Meanwhile Emma was the top name in 28 of the states, Olivia was top in 14 states and Ava in 10.  In lower rankings of the top five names came beautiful names like Aria in Hawaii, Amelia in states like Indiana and Maine and Paisley in states like Mississippi.  Based on these state trends, with Charlotte taking top spot in multiple states, 2018’s release may see that name taking a higher ranking, possibly even making it in to the top 5 names in the country!

Boy Baby Names

For boy names, top five name in the country, Mason, did not rank first for any state.  James only ranked first in three states.  While Noah was the number one name in the country, Liam was the top pick in many more states than NoahLiam is likely to be the top name next year while Oliver is very likely to be listed in the top 5.  Eleven states had Oliver as their top boy name in 2018!
